A Brief Limousine History

When you think limousine, you probably think of a special event or occasion associated with the fancy vehicle. A Limousine is known to be a stylish, luxurious mode of transportation for the wealthy. But how did this funny-looking car earn its reputation as a symbol of riches and fame?  The word “limousine” comes from the Limousin region of France where the original type of this transportation comes from. These first limousines were horse-drawn carriages whose drivers wore hooded cloaks, which were called limousines, to protect themselves from the elements as the royals sat protected inside. The term was eventually used to describe automobile limousines, which differ from other vehicles because the driver and passengers are in separate compartments.

The very first stretch limousine was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1928 by a coach company called Armbruster Coaches. These long cars were used to transport famous big band leaders and their equipment to tour around the country, and became known as “big band busses.” They also made armored stagecoaches and cars.

After invention of the automobile, new cars were used for high-class transportation. The Limousine was invented just in time for Hollywood’s Golden Age in the late 1920s, and naturally the film industry ate it up. Stretch vehicles were soon used to drive famous movie stars and celebrities around town. Imagery of these glitzy vehicles and their glamorous passengers circulated to the public through in film and newspapers, becoming luxury icons for the rich and famous. Hotels, tour guide companies, and film crews began using limousines as a classy and practical mode of transportation.

By the 1960s limos became the typical mode of transportation for presidents and important government officials. Since then, they have remained a staple in luxury vehicles but become accessible to more than just the rich and famous.
